Training The Eye

Presented at World Stage Design 2022 in Calgary, Alberta

Training the Eye involved the creation of design labs to develop skills in colour interaction in theatrical environments. Set within a safe and inclusive learning space, the labs drew inspiration from the often heard, and heart-sinking comment at the production desk: “Why can’t we see their faces?” Using a tool-kit of design elements anchored in light and pigment-vision colour theory, emerging and established theatre creators developed solutions by lighting various scenarios of inclusive skin tones, makeup, costume, and digital and built scenery, and the implications for digital capture.
